WE WERE HERE

Not a highlight reel.
The whole, messy journey.

Van life with dogs is equal parts freedom and logistics. These are the stories behind the beautiful views: missed turns, weather scares, roadside dinners, muddy beds, and the strangers who made unfamiliar places feel like home.

THE TURNAROUND

What does home
feel like?

Exhausted from the road, I finally turned around in Fort Sumner, New Mexico.

“What does home feel like?”

I took a deep breath and decided to head back toward Illinois—but not before making one last stop. At Billy the Kid’s gravestone, I left a deck of playing cards and a dollar and seventy-five cents.

Then I headed east.

THE ROUTE JOURNALS

Follow the tire tracks.

Each journey will become a practical route guide, filled in from real memories—not a recycled list of places we never visited.
